Water: storage, movement, and depth
Water (水, Shuǐ) describes the movement of storing, descending, adapting, and finding a path. It can be still or forceful, visible or hidden, and is traditionally linked with winter’s concentrated potential.
A phase,
not a label.
Water completes one cycle while carrying the conditions for the next. Rivers move around obstacles, reservoirs hold resources, and deep water conceals what cannot be seen from the surface. These images make Water a language for both flow and reserve—not a synonym for intuition alone.

One phase, two expressions
Yang Water
Ren Water (壬) is often compared with oceans, rivers, or large moving water: range, momentum, connectivity, and movement across distance.
Yin Water
Gui Water (癸) is often compared with rain, mist, dew, or underground water: subtle influence, gradual nourishment, and movement through small openings.
Reading Water

Water in a chart depends on season, temperature, containment, sources, and outlets. Winter Water and summer Water present different conditions. Its visible count does not by itself establish wisdom, emotion, abundance, or favorable use.
As a reflection metaphor, Water can invite questions about rest, reserve, uncertainty, listening, adaptability, fear, and the difference between responsive movement and losing direction.
Common misreadings
- Water does not automatically mean sensitivity, spirituality, or indecision.
- A lack of visible Water is not proof that someone lacks intuition or emotional depth.
- Water-themed objects are symbolic choices, not guaranteed remedies.
