Metal (金, Jīn) describes the movement of contraction, definition, refinement, and letting go. It gives form by drawing boundaries and separating what will be kept from what has completed its use.
A phase,
not a label.
In the seasonal cycle, Metal follows Earth and corresponds with autumn’s gathering and cutting back. Metal may be imagined as ore, a finished tool, a bell, or a blade—images that emphasize both value and precision. Its function is not coldness; it is the creation of clarity through form.

Yang Metal
Geng Metal (庚) is often compared with raw ore, a blade, or heavy tools: direct shaping, resilience under pressure, and change through decisive action.
Yin Metal
Xin Metal (辛) is often compared with jewelry, a needle, or refined metal: precision, standards, sensitivity to detail, and value created through finishing.
Reading Metal

Metal is interpreted through season, temperature, whether it is refined or supported, and how it relates to Fire, Earth, Wood, and Water. An autumn Metal sign and a spring Metal sign are not read in isolation as the same condition.
As a reflection language, Metal can support inquiry into standards, boundaries, editing, grief, completion, commitment, and the difference between useful precision and rigid perfectionism.
