The Year Pillar: origins and wider context
The Year Pillar (年柱, Niánzhù) is the first of the Four Pillars. It records the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch associated with the year boundary used by the calculation method.

pillar contributes
Traditional readings often connect the Year Pillar with ancestry, family background, early social environment, wider networks, and the part of a person that meets the public world. These are interpretive domains—not a claim that one column contains a person’s past or determines family outcomes.
How it is calculated
Bazi commonly changes the year at Lìchūn (立春, Beginning of Spring), not automatically on January 1 and not always on Lunar New Year. A birth close to Lìchūn requires an exact time, birthplace time zone, and a documented solar-term calculation.
What is inside it
The upper sign is the Year Stem; the lower sign is the Year Branch. The branch may also contain hidden stems. Each layer is interpreted in relation to the Day Master and the rest of the chart.

- The Year Pillar is not identical to the Chinese zodiac animal.
- It should not be read without the Month, Day, and Hour Pillars.
