The Day Pillar: the chart’s reference point

The Day Pillar (日柱, Rìzhù) contains the Day Stem—called the Day Master—and the Day Branch. The Day Master is the reference point used to name many relationships in a Bazi chart.

DAY PILLAR

What this
pillar contributes

The Day Stem does not summarize an entire personality. It provides the relational center from which the other stems and hidden stems are described through the Ten Gods system. Traditional readings also connect the Day Pillar with inner experience and close relationships, though emphasis varies by lineage.

How it is calculated

The day belongs to the continuous sixty-pair stem-branch cycle. Different Bazi methods may change the day at civil midnight or at the beginning of the late Zǐ hour around 23:00. The selected convention must be recorded, especially for late-night births.

What is inside it

The upper sign is the Day Master. Its phase and yin-yang quality become the comparison point. The Day Branch sits beneath it and may contain one or more hidden stems that form additional relationships to the Day Master.

Traditional domains of attention

01

Day Master as the chart’s relational reference

02

Inner experience and self-reflection in many readings

03

Close relationships or the partner domain in traditional practice

04

A central pillar that still requires the other three

What not to conclude

  • A Day Master label is not a personality test result.
  • The Day Branch must not be used to declare compatibility or relationship fate.
  • Late-night births require a stated day-boundary convention.

Reflection prompts

  1. Which descriptions feel useful as questions rather than labels?
  2. How does my inner experience differ from what others first see?
  3. What relationship pattern becomes clearer when I keep context in view?
